A Sunset Surf City Family Session with Two Wild Little Boys

There’s something so special about photographing families exactly as they are — especially when little ones are involved.

This Surf City family session was the perfect example of why I love a documentary-style approach to family photography. Instead of asking two busy toddler boys to sit still and smile for the camera, we let them do what they do best: play.

We spent the evening at the beach as the sun began to dip lower over the water, giving us that soft, warm coastal glow that makes sunset sessions on the North Carolina coast so magical. The boys ran through the sand, explored, laughed, chased each other, and soaked up every bit of their beach adventure.

And honestly? Those are the moments I want to photograph.

The little details — sandy feet, windblown hair, tiny hands reaching for each other, belly laughs, and the way parents naturally scoop their children up after a wild run down the beach — are often the photographs that become the most meaningful years later.

Let Them Play

When you have toddlers, a family photography session doesn’t have to mean perfectly posed photographs from beginning to end. In fact, some of the best images happen when everyone forgets the camera is even there.

For this family, we followed the boys’ lead. We played, explored, ran around, and let them be completely themselves. There was no pressure for them to behave perfectly or hold a pose for more than a few seconds.

That freedom creates photographs that feel genuine — photographs that actually capture what this season of childhood felt like.

Sunset on the North Carolina Coast

Surf City is one of my favorite places for family photography because the beach gives little ones so much room to move. Add in a beautiful sunset, the sound of the waves, and two toddlers who are ready to play, and you have everything you need for a memorable evening.

The golden light rolled across the sand while these boys played their way through the entire session. Their personalities came through in every frame, and their parents were able to simply enjoy their children instead of worrying about getting everyone to cooperate.

That’s what documentary-style family photography is all about.

It’s about capturing your family as you are right now — the chaos, the connection, the laughter, the movement, and all of those little moments you don’t want to forget.

Because someday, these boys won’t be running barefoot through the Surf City sand anymore.

And you’ll want to remember exactly how they did.

No forced smiles. No expectation of perfect behavior.

Just your family, together, doing what you naturally do.

And maybe a little sand everywhere by the end.
